Safer Cliffs Western Australia

in conjunction with CAWA Bolting Fund

History and FAQ

Safer Cliffs Western Australia is a non-profit voluntary group of climbers who maintain the safety of rock climbing areas in Western Australia. Safer Cliffs Western Australia has been helping keep Western Australia climbers safe from 2005 to present.

Safer Cliffs Western Australia's aim since 2005
Ensuring the long-term safety of fixed protection on climbing routes through collaborative, grassroots maintenance efforts.

Is Safer Cliffs Western Australia part of CAWA?
Safer Cliffs Western Australia is a supporter for the maintenance activities funded by the CAWA Bolting Fund which includes inspections, testing, anchor upgrades and rebolting.

What types of activities are undertaken?
Dangerous fixed anchors such as sun damaged slings, worn abseil anchors, poor quality or poorly positioned bolts and corroded bolts are replaced so that the climb is made as safe as possible. Equipment used is to the highest quality and designed to maximise longevity of use and minimise damage to the environment. Fixed anchors that are not being used for modern climbing will be removed and not replaced. We do not retrobolt routes without permission from the first ascentionists unless the lack of bolts poses a serious risk to safety.

Moving towards best-practice
While ensuring that Safer Cliffs' aim is respected, bolt and glue technology is constantly evolving and Safer Cliffs does support the evolution of equipping climbs with respect to world best-practice.

How can I help?
CAWA maintains a Rebolting Fund for the purpose of funding maintenance activities on Western Australia's cliffs. However, additional donations of gear, time, equipment and money remain important. If you have materials to donate, please contact us. You can also keep an eye out for potential issues while you are climbing. If you have the means to fix the issue, do so. If not, please raise the issue as a warning against the route on theCrag.com.

How can I help?

  1. Donate! Safer Cliffs Western Australia relies entirely on donations of gear, time, equipment and money to continue work. A single bolt costs upwards of $15 in hardware costs to replace.

  2. Look! You can also keep an eye out for potential issues while you are climbing. If you have the means to fix the issue, do so. If not, please raise the issue as a warning against the route on theCrag.com.
